As part of the pre-season preparations, London Scottish visited Blackheath’s training ground at Well Hall for their first run out of the season. Scottish used this match to give the majority of the available squad game-time, in a match which was played over four 20 minute sessions. Scottish ran out winners 33 -7 scoring 5 tries in the process, with a number of the new players at the club in high prominence.

With a large squad in attendance, Scottish provided each of the players with the opportunity to gain some match time by inter-changing players on a rolling basis. In the starting XV Scottish gave a first run out to Matt Heeks, Dan Mugford, Steve Pape, Ollie Grove, Alex McKenzie and Nick Auterac. As with any pre-season match it is an opportunity for new players at the club to work on their partnerships and learn to develop within the style adopted by the coaching team. Scottish opened the scoring after 5 minutes, when Mugford made a great break down the right wing into the Blackheath 22. He drew the opposition towards him and off loaded to John Bordiss who broke the line and raced away to score to the right of the posts. Mugford converted to put Scottish 7 – 0 ahead.

Scottish increased their lead during the second 20 minute period when Mugford sold a brilliant dummy to the Blackheath back line and raced away to score beneath the posts and subsequently converted to put Scottish 14 – 0 up. Blackheath reduced their arrears when their forwards drove over from a rolling maul. In the fourth and final session Scottish scored three further tries. The first from Simon Amor who dived over after picking up the ball at the base of a ruck on the Blackheath line. The Scottish forwards then drove deep into the Blackheath 22 following a series of off-loads. The ball was fed out to the backs and passed through hands to scrum half Jamie Stevenson who was out on the wing to score. The Blackheath cause was further dented when one of their players was yellow carded. Scottish closed out the match close to the final whistle, when James Kellard drove over beneath the posts, after a period of intense pressure on the Blackheath line. Craig Ratford converted to leave the final score 33 – 7.

A first run out for the new look Scottish squad which will have allowed the coaching staff to run the rule over the squad with a number of new combinations on show. Three more pre-season fixtures are ahead, (this opening fixture certainly blew away the close season cobwebs) and will provide the coaching staff with further opportunities to shape the team ahead of the season's opening league fixture on Sunday the 4th of September. The next fixture on the agenda is the tasty home encounter with Scottish Cup holders Ayr on Friday 19th August. Make sure you get down to the RAG and join in the fun. See you all there.
