Titans see off Scots in top four battle

London Scottish ended the regular season in disappointing fashion losing 19-3 to fourth placed Rotherham Titans in an error strewn encounter at Abbeydale Sports Ground.

The Scots were 3-0 up at half-time and despite having the wind on their backs in the second half, it was Titans who proved the far more resilient side scoring 19 unanswered points which secured them a deserved victory.

Both clubs now turn their attentions to the end of season play-offs with Bristol’s come from behind win at Worcester Warriors today meaning Dean Ryan’s Warriors travel to the Athletic Ground next Saturday, May 2, 1.45pm kick-off for a semi-final first leg against Scottish.

Scottish began this match brightly with a fine break by centre Matt Hawke seeing Titans penalised on their own line, Peter Lydon kicking the three points from straight in front on eight minutes.

The game was initially very stop-start not helped by eight scrums in the opening 18 minutes.

With the wind at their backs in the first half, Titans will have been disappointed not to have turned a couple of good attacking opportunities into points.

On 24 minutes Titans kicker Tom Barrett saw a penalty from distance hit the post and bizarrely end up in touch for a five metre line-out to the Scots which they eventually cleared to safety.

Just before half-time, Titans full-back Sean Scanlon made a fine break from inside his own half before feeding winger Jamie Broadley who was tackled into touch near the tryline by Matt Williams who had tracked across from the right wing to cover.

The impressive Williams himself was bundled into touch near the Titans line early in the second half as the Scots pushed for a second score.

It was Titans however who got over the tryline themselves on 55 minutes, Robin Hislop going over from close range after a period of incessant pressure, Barrett’s conversion making it 7-3.

It got better for the hosts 10 minutes later when winger Broadley thundered in from 40 metres out, alluding Peter Lydon’s tackle to score a fine individual effort.

Barrett’s conversion was wide but Titans had suddenly opened up a commanding 12-3 lead.

Rotherham then rounded off a superb second half with Barrett going over in the final minute for their third try after good work by Broadley and Sean Scanlon.

Fly half Barrett kicked the conversion making it 19-3 at full-time.
