Scottish Succumb To Leeds Defeat

London Scottish succumbed to a second home Championship defeat of the season, losing 14-37 to Leeds Carnegie at the Richmond Athletic Ground.

PJ Gidlow and Chevvy Pennycook both scored tries to stage a comeback attempt after Scottish had fallen to two early Leeds tries but visiting fly half Joe Ford maintained his side’s lead with regular points from the kicking tee and the away side ran in four tries, securing the bonus point win in the last minute of the game.

It was Scottish who began the game the strongest, with the forward pack earning two opportunities for Phil Godman to kick his side ahead. However, both of Godman’s penalties were unsuccessful and Leeds then raced down field to take the lead themselves. James Doherty broke clear and clever offloading from him and Richard Beck put in David Doherty, who just evaded the covering tackle to dot down over the line.

And Leeds doubled the try count moments later, creating a big overlap on the right wing for OIi Goss to score in the corner. Ford nailed both conversions and pushed the lead out further with two well struck penalties.

Scottish hit back before half time, however, as PJ Gidlow crashed over from close range after sustained pressure close to the Leeds try line. Godman converted and, moments later, he had an opportunity to further reduce the deficit but his penalty rebounded off the goalpost, leaving the half time score at 7-20.

Moments into the second half, Ford increased the Carnegie lead with a penalty from 30 metres out. Scottish went through the phases, trying to break down the stubborn Leeds defence and in the 60th minute, Chevvy Pennycook capitalised on a spell of Scottish pressure in the Leeds 22 and bundled his way over the line. Godman’s conversion brought the score to 14-23 and Scottish were fighting their way back into the match.

Any positive momentum was short lived, however, as Leeds replied with a try of their own. Goss broke from the halfway line before slick hands from Fred Burdon and Joe Graham put in Rob Baldwin to saunter over under the posts.

Leeds grabbed their fourth try in the dying embers of the match to secure the bonus point. The away side camped out in the Scottish 22 and, after several phases, the ball was flung out to David Doherty to stretch over in the left corner. Ford continued his fine day with the boot by adding an excellent touchline conversion.

The result is just the second home defeat of the season in the Championship for Scottish. Scottish travel to Plymouth Albion on Friday 9th November.
