After a disappointing run of games at the tail end of 2018, where Scottish dominated possession and territory, but could not come away with the win, they were looking to start their first game of 2019 in explosive fashion.

Hartpury started on the front foot, moving the ball around well and probing the Scottish defence, but some huge tackles went in from Vukasinovic and Wynne to rattle the visitors. Cozens gave Hartpury an early 3-0 lead, which was cancelled out minutes later by Jennings.

The first try came from a Hartpury error; Perry cleared the ball downfield from the back of the scrum, which the full back took without any issue, but under pressure from Stevenson seemed to fumble the ball to him, which Stevenson duly caught and ran in under the posts. Jennings converted, LSFC 10-3 Hartpury with 17 minutes played.

Hartpury attacked but were undone by the Scots line speed, and continued to make handling errors throughout the half. More pressure from the Scots forced Hartpury to concede a pen in front of their own posts, so Jennings extended the lead, LSFC 13-3 Hartpury which is how it remained until half time.

Despite Hartpury enjoying the majority of the possession, they struggled to deal with the Scottish line speed and physicality; Wynne, Vukasinovic, Harding and Tyas all made huge dents in the Gloucestershire side.

In the second half, it was all one way traffic. Scottish now had the edge physically and were getting more of the ball. Griffiths, dual registered with Saracens, & Fowlie, on loan from London Irish, who were making their debuts caused the Hartpury defence all sorts of problems. It was Stevenson though who was the focus of the Hartpury frustration.

Stevenson broke down the wing and looked certain to score, before a flying arm took him clean around the neck but the ref saw no reason to bring out a card, the tackle made just about everyone in the stands wince. Four minutes later, Stevenson was taken out in the air and looked to have landed badly. Still the cards stayed in the refs pocket.

It wasn’t until the 57th minute that Scottish extended their lead. They had worked their way down to, then along the 5m line. Hart spotted a gap from the back of the ruck and darted to the line, Jennings converted, LSFC 20-3 Hartpury with 20 minutes to play.

Scottish dominated the rest of the half, but couldn’t turn it into points. The Hartpury defence held firm, and held the Scots up over the line three times. On the 79th minute though, Scottish finally got through. Scottish went along the 5m line, picking & going until Matt Davidson barged his way over. No conversion, LSFC 25-3.

Scottish switched off, and from the re-start Hartpury picked up a scrum. While nobody was watching Foley ran almost unopposed from the 22 to score the consolation try for the travelling side. No conversion meant the game ended 25-8.

The was one of the most complete and dominant performances from Scottish, their physicality and line speed was something Hartpury couldn’t adjust to. Stand out performances from the man of the match, Theo Vukasinovic, plus Tyas, Wynne & Stevenson.
