Scots leave Vallis Way with bonus point after try fest in the Ealing sun

London Scottish scored five tries of their own but were outscored by a ruthless Ealing Trailfinders side that secured their place in the Greene King IPA Championship play-offs with a 72-29 victory at Vallis Way.

London Scottish scored five tries of their own but were outscored by a ruthless Ealing Trailfinders side that secured their place in the Greene King IPA Championship play-offs with a 72-29 victory at Vallis Way.

Ealing were rampant in the first half and had a 39-7 lead at the break, but the Scots responded in the second half to make sure they left with a four try bonus point in the London sunshine.

It was the hosts that started the better, with Rory Clegg kicking them in to a 3-0 lead from 40 metres inside the first minute.

Joe Munro opened the try-scoring for the day with a long range effort which started inside their own 22, before Alun Walker drove over from a rolling maul and Miles Mantella dotted down in the corner following some neat offloading to give Ealing a 22-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Scottish got on the scoreboard after a try from Ewan McQuillin on the 20 minute mark. Some rare possession saw them build towards the Ealing line, and then from a line out a rolling maul allowed the prop to bundle over. Harry Sheppard’s conversion cut the deficit to 22-7.

Ben Rath then raced clear down the right touchline but couldn’t find a fellow London Scot in support meaning the chance went by, and then Ealing responded with another three tries before half time.

Rory Clegg went over from close range, before Alun Walker drove over for his second try and then Arthur Ellis took a quick penalty to dive over and give the Trailfinders a 39-7 lead at the break.

Scottish started the second half showing excellent spirit in attempt to get back in to the match. Jason Harries scored a brilliant try on 45 minutes, showing all of his qualities after smashing through his defender and then racing clear from 25 metres to score.

Ealing then scored another through Will Harries who gathered a high ball and stepped a number of defenders to run over the line, before Matt Marley got a third for Scottish with a big carry on the right touchline seeing the Welsh flanker dive over in the corner. Sheppard’s touchline conversion made the score 44-17 after a frantic 50 minutes.

Peter Lydon then made sure of a four try bonus point after gathering the ball in the 22 and cutting through the defence to score against the side he will join in the summer, but it was then time for Ealing to pull away and put the match beyond any doubt.

Arthur Ellis skipped past the Scottish defence for his second try of the match, before former London Scot Miles Mantella also got his second from a long range counter attack which took the Trailfinders over the 50 point mark.

Will Harries was then on hand from another long range attack from turnover to score their 10th of the match, and then Josh Davies pounced on a loose ball which allowed him to stretch and dot the ball down under the posts. Clegg converted, which took them to 72 points.

Alec Coombes rounded off the scoring with the 16th try of the match in the last play of the game. A knock on fell to the hands of the Scot, who stepped the defender and ran in unattended for the fifth Scottish try of the game.

The referee then blew the whistle after a 72-29 defeat, and the Scots will look to round off the Greene King IPA Championship season with a victory at home to Nottingham next Saturday at the Athletic Ground.
