Scots leave it late to defeat Rotherham in dramatic fashion

London Scottish secured a memorable 31-30 victory over Rotherham Titans, after a dramatic second half saw them score five tries including one in the last minute to register their first win of the 2016/17 season.

The Scots trailed 10-0 at the break after some ill-discipline was starving them of possession but came out firing in the second 40 minutes, and tries from Jamie Stevenson, Joe Atkinson, David Cherry, Patrick Kelly and Danny Kenny secured a bonus-point win.

Rotherham took an early lead through the boot of Charlie Foley, who kicked a penalty to edge them 3-0 ahead.

The Scots were giving away a number of penalties which saw referee Michael Hudson lose patience, sending Tom Galbraith and Ally Miller to the sin-bin in the first half.

Impressive defence was keeping Scottish in touch with the Titans, but the pressure told just before the break after Charlie Maddison drove over the line from close range. Foley’s conversion gave the hosts a 10-0 lead at half time.

Will Robinson made it 13-0 with a penalty two minutes in to the second half, before the Scots turned on their attacking style.

Jamie Stevenson got Scottish on the scoreboard with a great try on 47 minutes. Ally Miller broke away from the base of a scrum on the half-way line and offloaded to Stevenson, before another one-two between the pair saw them draw in a number of defenders and allowed the scrum-half to race clear. Peter Lydon’s conversion cut the deficit to 13-7.

Joe Atkinson put the Scots in front five minutes later with his first try for the club. The flanker broke off the back of a rolling maul from five metres to go over the line, and Lydon’s conversion put Scottish 14-13 ahead.

On the hour mark Dave Cherry extended the lead with the third try of a 10 minute spell, and his first since joining in 2014. Another rolling maul from close range allowed the hooker to drive over, and give the Scots a 19-13 advantage.

Rotherham responded five minutes later to re-take the lead. The Titans had sustained pressure in the Scottish 22, and Cameron Hudson’s quick feet saw him escape the approaching defenders to score. Robinson’s conversion edged them 20-19 ahead.

Patrick Kelly then scored a brilliant solo try on his debut to see the lead change hands again. The centre got the ball, ran through a number of defenders outside the 22 and then showed great pace to run over the line. Lydon’s conversion gave Scottish a six point lead.

Then just a minute later Rotherham scored their third try to send the Clifton Lane crowd wild. The hosts regained the ball straight from the re-start, and a smart offload gave Luke Cole a clear run to the line. Robinson’s conversion which was quickly followed by another penalty gave them a 30-26 advantage.

The match looked to have got away from the Scots in agonising fashion, but the players had other ideas with the clock showing just one minute left. A number of phases in the 22 created an overlap, and Danny Kenny was the man in space on the right touchline to secure the dramatic victory.

Scottish now face another trip North next weekend, when they take on Yorkshire Carnegie at Headingley on Sunday 25th September.
