Scots leave Bristol with the bonus point

Scots leave Bristol with the bonus point

Last week against Ealing Trailfinders, Bristol left it until the 76th minute before finally pulling clear to secure a hard-fought victory. That win saw them coming into this game, sitting on top of the table, and undefeated so far this season.

London Scottish were looking for their first win on the road at Ashton Gate. Last week, at home to the Doncaster Knights, saw a much improved performance from Scottish and they dominated for large parts of the game, but were unable to come away with the win.

In cold, windy, and wet conditions on Saturday afternoon in the West Country, the game began quickly. In the second minute, Bristol worked the ball well from one side of the pitch to the other, into the hands of Tom Varndell who blew past the Scottish defence for the opening try. Ian Madigan put a simple kick between the posts to convert.

The next ten minutes were all Bristol, moving the ball through the hands & going through the phases. Mat Protheroe, Chris Vui & Tom Varndell, who were looking absolutely electric every time they got the ball, were constantly trying to put Bristol on the front foot, and run at the Scottish defence.

This attacking rugby was rewarded, when a catch and drive from a 5m line out ended in a penalty try for the home side, increasing Bristol’s lead to 14-0  in the opening 12 minutes.

Scottish suddenly got themselves into gear, and a neat, clever chip from Sharp over the Bristol defence was dived on by Craig Holland, who appeared to be the only man on the pitch alert to it. Sharp added the conversion, to cut the deficit to 7 points.

Bristol used the ball well throughout the entire first half; on the 22 minute mark, the ball went through the hands to Leiua who took advantage of some space in front of him, for a simple run in, under the posts. Madigan adding the conversion to restore the 14 point gap.

Scottish began putting together their own phases, and from a scrum on the 22, moved the ball quickly wide into the hands of Neal, who from 5m out smashed over the final defender to score. Sharp had his kicking boots with him, and brought the score to 14-21.

The final ten minutes of the half was evenly matched, neither team able to exploit any holes in the others defence.

Bristol came speeding out of the blocks in the second half, and Varndell read the Scottish play; intercepting the pass on the 22’ within the first two minutes, & ran in a simple try to extend his teams lead. Only five minutes later, he cemented his Man of the Match performance, by securing his hat trick try. A clever chip through from Madigan over the top of the Scottish line was collected by Varndell, and he dived over the try line. Within ten minutes of the first half, Bristol had raced to 14-33.

A patchy second ten minutes was broken when Hurrell was passed the ball on the Scottish 10m line; dancing through the tackles, he broke for the line. It was a terrific piece of individual skill.

Scottish finally got their chance to hit back; Scottish went through the phases on the Bristol 5m line, until the ball was worked wide to Scott who ran un-opposed to the line to touch down in the corner; LSFC 19-40 Bristol.

Bristol hit right back, from a scrum on the Scottish 22, the ball popped out and found itself in the hands of Rhodri Williams who darted for the line; breaking through the tackles, he touched down under the posts.

In the final few minutes, Scottish went on the attack… Bristol, pinned on their 5m, attempted to clear, but it was charged down by Tyas… Gregor Gillanders was first to react to touch it down.  Final score in a thrilling game, in front of the largest crowd anywhere so far this season, London Scottish 26-47 Bristol Rugby.
