Scots edged out by Jersey to suffer British and Irish Cup defeat

Jersey Reds completed a British and Irish Cup double over London Scottish with a 23-19 victory at St Peter's.

Jersey Reds completed a British and Irish Cup double over London Scottish with a 23-19 victory at St Peter’s.

The Scots matched their opponents all the way and can feel extremely hard done-by to leave without a victory. Whilst the result doesn’t mathematically mean Scottish exit the Cup, they will need other results to go in their favour to have any chance of qualification.

A try from Jason Harries as well as four penalties and a conversion from George Cullen looked to have given the Scots the platform to victory, but the hosts responded and took the win after a late try from Ross Adair.

Scottish started the match brilliantly in what were extremely challenging conditions. Cullen kicked his first points for the club on the 10 minute mark to give his side a 3-0 lead.

Jersey responded with a try from Adair, who was the beneficiary of an overlap on the left wing to score in the corner. Sam Katz, who kicked brilliantly all evening converted from the touchline to put the hosts 7-3 ahead.

George Turner was then sent to the sin-bin for bringing down a maul, but despite the extreme pressure from Jersey it was the Scots who would score next.

Harries scored his sixth try of the season in sensational style to put the Scots in front. The attack began in their own 22 and 13 phases later after every player participating, Ewan McQuillin found a neat offload to send the Welsh winger clear to score under the posts. Cullen converted to put Scottish 10-7 ahead, which is how the score would stay until half time.

The Scots started the second half in similar fashion to the first, and Cullen’s 40 metre penalty extended the lead to 13-7. However the Reds came back impressively, and two penalties in as many minutes from Katz levelled the score with half an hour to play.

A kicking battle between the two fly-halves then followed. Cullen kicked another two penalties to put Scottish 19-13 ahead, but they couldn’t continue the momentum and Katz cut the gap to three.

Scottish then had a great chance from the re-start. Fergusson claimed the kick and then passed to Coombes who was one-on-one with the final defender but was unable to beat his opponent and was pulled in to touch.

Adair then scored his second try of the evening with 10 minutes remaining to put the Reds ahead. The winger won the race to a grubber kick and dotted down in the corner, which was then converted by Katz to give them a 23-19 lead and ultimately win them the match.

The Scots then went through a number of phases in attempt to rescue the match in the closing stages, but the hosts held firm in defence to close out a hard-fought win.

Scottish now return to Greene King IPA Championship action, as they travel to face neighbours London Welsh at Old Deer Park on Christmas Eve.
