London Scottish produced their most complete performance of the season, controlling the match to record an impressive 28-12 victory over Ealing Trailfinders.

The Scots were good value for their win despite a fiery match which featured four yellow cards, but were helped by a 100% kicking record from man-of-the-match Peter Lydon with seven penalties and a conversion, as well as a try from Jason Harries.

Scottish were looking to put in a performance for their fans after most of their wins this season had come on the road, and Lydon’s first two penalties in the opening 10 minutes gave them an early 6-0 lead.

Jason Harries got his fourth try of the season on the 15 minute mark. A huge break from Ifereimi Boladau who smashed his way over his opponent saw the Fijian draw in the last defender and then pass to the Welsh winger who raced clear under the posts. Lydon converted to give his side a 13-0 advantage.

Lydon kicked another two penalties in quick succession, including one from 50 metres to extend the lead to 19-0 before Ealing’s Joe Munro was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle.

The visitors had a golden chance to get back in the match just before the half-hour. A huge overlap on the right hand side was calling, but an attempted cross-kick was sliced and the ball went dead to the relief of the 951 in attendance.

Lydon kicked his fifth penalty of the half to give the Scots a 22-0 lead, but Danny Kenny was then sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle which allowed Ealing to get themselves on the scoreboard before the break.

The Trailfinders had a scrum five metres from the Scottish line and after earning a number of penalties Ewan McQuillin was also sent to the sin-bin. The referee eventually lost patience, awarding them a penalty try which Aaron Penberthy converted to cut the deficit to 22-7 at the break.

Scottish were forced to play the opening 10 minutes of the second half with just 13 players, but despite being outnumbered the lead increased as Lydon again  was successful from the tee with a penalty.

Ealing got their second try of the match after 50 minutes. A five metre line out gave their forwards the perfect platform, and the rolling maul allowed Alun Walker to drive over the line. The conversion went wide, meaning the visitors trailed 25-12.

Lydon made it 28-12 on the hour mark, and as the Scottish bench introduced more energy in to the side the defensive work rate was huge as they shut out their opponents.

In a similar way that manufactured the win over Bedford Blues last week, the Scots played the conditions brilliantly and constantly pinned back the Trailfinders with an impressive kicking game.

Ealing had one more chance to cut the deficit in the last minute with a five metre scrum that saw Dan Koroi sent to the sin-bin, but the referee eventually gave the Scots a penalty which was smashed in to touch to celebrate a superb 28-12 victory.

Scottish now move up to fifth in the Greene King IPA Championship after recording back-to-back victories, and now turn their focus to the British and Irish Cup when the host Jersey Reds next Saturday at the Athletic Ground.
