London Scottish made it two wins from two matches in the 2015/16 British and Irish Cup, with a hard-fought but deserved 23-16 victory over the Ospreys Premiership Select XV at the Port Talbot Athletic Ground.

The Scots trailed 13-10 at half-time but were dominant in the second-half, and a try from Matt Shields as well as two penalties and a conversion from Peter Lydon secured them a valuable win in difficult conditions.

It was a hugely tight opening 40 minutes, and Robbie Fergusson nearly sneaked through the defence after a cross kick from Oli Grove found Jason Harries in space on the touch line. The winger offloaded inside but Fergusson was caught as it looked like he would go all the way.

A Peter Lydon penalty opened the scoring after 11 minutes, the full-back struck the ball through the posts to give the Scots a 3-0 advantage.

Scott Otten scored the first try of the evening in what was the Ospreys’ first chance of the match. The hosts had a line-out just outside the Scottish 22, and the hooker was able to break away from a maul to run through unattended. Martin Roberts dragged the conversion wide, but his side had a 5-3 lead.

The Scots went back in front after 23 minutes as their dominance in the scrum was finally rewarded. A string of five-metre scrums was enough for the referee to award Scottish a penalty try, and Lydon’s conversion put them 10-5 in front.

Martin Roberts levelled the scores three minutes later with the Ospreys’ second try of the night. The scrum-half sniped past the defenders to dive over the line from close range. Joel Matavesi’s conversion struck the post, but he was successful with a penalty right on half-time to give them a 13-10 lead at the break.

Matt Shields scored 10 minutes into the second-half with what turned out to be a decisive try. The Scots were camped in the Ospreys 22, and with an overlap on the left hand side, the prop was able to score in the corner. Lydon’s impressive conversion from the touchline put the Scots 17-13 ahead.

Chevvy Pennycook was yellow carded which allowed Matavesi to cut the gap to one point, but Scottish closed out the game impressively in the final quarter.

Lydon’s second penalty extended the lead to 20-16, before they spent the entire final 10 minutes in the Ospreys 22, searching for a way to close out the match.

They got to within inches of the line, and got a scrum just five metres from the Ospreys line. The Scots were awarded four penalties in a row, and eventually opted for the posts. Lydon’s penalty secured an impressive 23-16 win.

Scottish now return to Greene King IPA Championship action, and face Bristol Rugby at Ashton Gate on Friday, 27th November, 19:45 kick-off live on Sky Sports.
