London Scottish suffered defeat in the British and Irish Cup for the first time this season after a disappointing 56-7 loss to Yorkshire Carnegie at Scarborough Rugby Club.

The Scots trailed 20-7 at the break and were on top for most of the first-half, but a five-try second-half from the hosts saw them run riot and score 36 unanswered points to secure a comprehensive victory.

Kevin Sinfield’s first penalty of the afternoon gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage after as many minutes, despite Scottish having the vast majority of ball and territory in the opening exchanges.

Howard Packman looked to have scored on his debut after a bizarre period of play saw Nathan Earle’s kick through come back off the corner flag in to the wingers arms, but the referee controversially ruled it out.

Yorkshire scored their first try on the 15-minute mark, and it was a sign of things to come as Chris Walker drove over the line from a rolling maul. Sinfield’s first of five conversions put them 10-0 ahead.

Scottish got themselves back into the match just before the half-hour mark. A five-metre line out gave the Scots the perfect platform, and Chris Walker scrambled over the line to score. Newton’s conversion cut the deficit to 10-7.

The following 10 minutes until the break proved costly for Scottish. A Sinfield penalty made it 13-7, before Chris Walker’s second try on 38 minutes from another driving maul saw Yorkshire head down the tunnel at the break with a 20-7 advantage.

The second-half was not one for the memory bank, as Yorkshire rampaged their way to a bonus-point win.

Sinfield’s penalty two minutes in to the second 40 made the gap between the sides 16 points, which was already looking like an uphill battle.

Chris Walker completed his hat-trick on 51 minutes with another rolling maul, before a spell of four tries in 15 minutes delighted the Scarborough crowd.

David Doherty was the beneficiary of a cross-kick from Sinfield for the bonus-point score, who was able to claim the high ball and score in the corner.

Taylor Prell was next over the line, Bryan Redpath’s side had a huge overlap on the left hand side, and the full-back coasted in against a depleted Scottish defence.

Josh Bainbridge came off the bench and completed the scoring with two tries. The first score saw him take a ball very flat from just five metres out and crash over the line, whilst the second was another that the pack will take credit for from a rolling maul.

Harry Leonard’s conversion rounded off what was a bad day at the office for the Scots, and secure an emphatic 56-7 victory.

The two sides face each other again next Saturday at the Athletic Ground at 15:00 in round four of the British and Irish Cup, in a crucial match for the Scots to get their campaign back on track.
