Penalties Cost Scottish in Ealing

Penalties Cost Scottish in Ealing

Despite dominating the game against Ealing Trailfinders last week, Ealing came away from the RAG with a good win after a clinical opening and closing 10 minutes. London Scottish made their way over the Thames to Vallis Way looking to turn their possession into points.

Scottish took an early lead through a Perry penalty, but Alun Walker, who scored a brace last week, was quick to reply. After conceding a couple of penalties, Ealing had a 5m line out; the ball was over thrown but collected by Armitage who had enough strength to get the ball away, a couple of passes went wide to Walker who ran in, in the corner. No conversion, LSFC 3-5 Ealing after 10 minutes.

Ealing doubled their lead three minutes later through Harries; from a line out on the 22, Ealing moved the ball around well, pulling defenders into the ruck. Once there was enough space, the ball went wide to Harries on the wing who had an easy run in. No conversion again, LSFC 3-10 Ealing.

On the 20 min mark, Ealing extended their lead further through Smid. A carbon-copy of the previous try; a penalty gifted Ealing a line out on the 22m line, Ealing moved the ball around well, Smid picked the ball up and went over the ruck, offloading to Burns on his shoulder who dotted down. LSFC 3-15 Ealing with 20 minutes left to play, after May missed his third conversion attempt.

Another penalty against Scottish, another 22m line out and another try, this time the catch & drive went all the way to the try line. Els holding the ball as they crossed. Kicking duties were handed to Willis who scored the conversion. Half Time, LSFC 3-22 Ealing, strong performances from Saunders, plus Wakeling & Goveia who was making his debut for Scottish.

Scottish dominated the opening exchanges of the second half, Eliet & Frost were solid in defence, and Obatoyinbo was causing all sorts of problems for the Ealing players, but Trailfinders got the first points of the half through Burns. From the back of a scrum, the number 8 scooped it up and offloaded to Burns who showed the Scottish defence a clean pair of heels to score by the posts. Willis converted, LSFC 3-29 with half an hour still to play.

Scottish got their first try just 5 minutes later. Ealing had a scrum on their own 5m line, and tried to be clever and walk it forward but Barton was more alert than their own scrum half, and managed to steal the ball from the back of the scrum. He darted for the try line, but was stopped short by just a few inches. A few phases later, Scottish were awarded a penalty. From the resulting 5m line out, the catch & drive made its way to the line, with replacement hooker billy Harding who peeled off the back to score. No conversion, LSFC 8-29 Ealing after 60 minutes.

With only 20 minutes to play, Barton began to control the game more & more, and Ealing were struggling to gain possession or get out of their own half. With 5 minutes to go, Scottish went through a huge number of phases along the Ealing 5m line, but to Trailfinders’ credit, Scottish could not find a way through. Big carries from the forwards were met with a green & white wall. Eventually the pressure told, and Ealing conceded a penalty. From the back of a 5m scrum, Barton went alone, stepped two defenders and scored a great solo try. Jennings converted to make the final score, LSFC 15-29 Ealing.

The number of penalties conceded by Scottish were their downfall, and the scoreline certainly flattered Ealing. Stand out performances from some of the young Scots; Wakeling, Vukasinovic, Barton & Frost.
