Disappointment at the RAG for Scottish

It’s been three convincing wins out of four for London Scottish so far in 2019, and they were brimming with confidence ahead of the home encounter with Bedford, whom they beat at the Goldlington Road earlier in the season.

Bedford came into this game off a positive performance against league leaders London Irish, so were hoping to carry that form into the game.

It was Bedford who took the initiative in the first half, and opened the scoring almost right away through Hutler with just two minutes played. Scottish conceded two penalties in quick succession which gave Bedford a 5m line out to work from. The catch & drive went nowhere, Dickson saw space on the wing and sent the ball wide to Hutler who had an easy run in. No conversion, LSFC 0-5 Bedford.

Bedford extended their lead further with a penalty from Hooley minutes later. Scottish got on the scoreboard through the try scoring machine that is Matt Eliet at the moment. A Jennings penalty bounced off the post, Scots got to the ball first and recycled. Beattie made huge metres on the wing, from the ruck the ball was given to Eliet who ran in to score. Jennings converted, LSFC 7-8 Bedford on 24 mins.

Bedford added another three points from Hooley, but it was Scottish who had their tails up. However the story of the half was how many errors Scottish were making. Beattie burst down the wing, but his offload in the tackle went to nobody. The Blues scooped it up and ran 70m to the other end to score. Lane the man who dotted down. LSFC 7-18 Blues with a Sharp conversion.

Another error from Scottish on the 39 minute mark, another try for the Blues. From a line out on their own 5m line, the ball was over thrown. The Blues got to it first, it went through the hands to Worthington who crashed over to score. Not converted, LSFC 7-23 Blues.

Scottish put some nice phases together in the opening stages of the second half, but were unable to get over the whitewash. It was Bedford who scored first. Scottish worked their way deep into the Blues half by crashing over the gainline; the Blues appeared to be off their feet at the ruck and trying to grab it on the floor, but the ref saw nothing illegal and play went on. Though seemingly offside also, the Blues were able to intercept the pass and run the full 60m back the other way to score. Adamson the scorer. Easily converted by Sharp, LSFC 7-30 Blues with 25 mins to play.

Scottish attacked and earned themselves a 5m line out. The catch & drive went nowhere, but was held up illegally. Brand took a quick pen from 5m out and dived over to score a great solo effort. Not converted, LSFC 12-30 Blues on 67 minutes.

From the re-start that followed, Scottish gathered and carried into contact. The Blues knocked the ball on in contact, but the ref gave them the scrum. From that platform, they went 5 phases, then pinged the ball to Worley on the wing to score. No conversions, LSFC 12-35 Blues with 10 minutes left.

Scottish answered back immediately through Mantella. Scottish gathered the re-start, and pinged it wide, Mantella shrugged off his tackler and stepped another to score a superb individual try.  Not converted, LSFC 17-35 Bedford, which is how it ended.

On the whole, Scottish will be bitterly disappointed with this display after such a strong start to the year; their mistakes and errors were punished by a Bedford side who were more than happy to take the points on offer. Stand out performances from Man of the Match Matt Eliet, Theo Vukasinovic, & Billy Harding.
