Comfortable Win at the RAG for Scottish

Scottish have enjoyed a positive start to 2019; a commanding win over Hartpury, and a narrow defeat to second placed Ealing Trailfinders. Nottingham traveled to the RAG sitting three places ahead of Scottish in the league.

Scottish were caught short almost from the off. The kick off was spilled and Nottingham scooped it up, went 5-6 phases and touched down. The ref disallowed the try, but awarded Nottingham a 5m scrum. Nottingham moved the ball around well, and were camped in the Scots 22 for 8 more minutes until space opened up for them to score. Pulling everyone into the ruck they created space on the wing which Millet was able to exploit. No conversion, LSFC 0-5 Nottingham with 10 minutes played.

Scottish suddenly seemed to wake up and want to play, and they took control of the game for the final 70 minutes. Slick in attack, solid in defence, Nottingham could not find a way to break Scottish down. On the 21st minute, Charlie Ingall announced his return after a 3-month layoff by scoring the first of two tries. Scottish pinged the ball around to Mantella on the wing, who, under pressure, tried a little dink of a kick over the top. Ingall was first to it and juggled it in the air before dotting down. The ever reliable boot of Jennings added the two, LSFC 7-5 Nottingham. Jennings kept the scoreboard ticking over with a pen on the 32nd minute.

Scottish grew into the game, and had more & more possession in the first half. Nottingham put nice phases of play together but could not get past bright, Eliet or Wynne in the middle of the park. Just before half time, Scottish extended their lead further through Vernon. Scottish moved the ball through the hands from one wing to the other on the 22, until Vernon cut a beautiful line through the defence to canter in to score by the posts. Jennings converted again, Half Time: LSFC 17-5 Nottingham.

Nottingham came out firing in the second half, but could not deal with the Scots line speed. After going 10+ phases in the Scots 22, they seemed all out of ideas and were trying passes that were never going to come off. Mantella, picking up his 50th cap, read the play and intercepted a pass and ran 60m alone to score. Jennings converted again, LSFC 24-5 Nottingham, with half an hour to play.

Nottingham enjoyed a lot of possession but could not make it count. Huge numbers of phases would fizzle to nothing under pressure from the defence. Scottish extended their lead further with 10 minutes to play, Scottish tried some exhibition-style rugby in the Nottingham half, pulling the opposition every which way to open up space. Eventually it came, and the ball was sent wide to Ingall, who stepped his man to score. Jennings converted again, LSFC 31-5 Nottingham.

Nottingham were not going home without a fight, and got a late try through Williams. Nottingham, from a 5m line out, pulled the defence tight into the maul, until Williams had enough space to run in and score. No conversion. Final Score, LSFC 31-10 Nottingham.

Another commanding performance from Scottish to round off a very positive start to 2019. Stand out performances from Eliet, Wynne, Ingall and man of the match Vernon.
