Good performance from the Scots in tricky conditions

Good performance from the Scots in tricky conditions

London Scottish headed into today’s game with no chances of qualifying for the next stages of The Championship Cup but still wanted a good performance against the Reds to set them up for the return of league action when they head down to Penzance to face the Cornish Pirates on 30th December.

After the scrappy opening exchanges, Scottish earned a cheap penalty 35 metres out which Rory Jennings knocked through the sticks for an early lead. Scottish were 3 points up after 10 minutes.

The following 15 minutes were largely uneventful as both teams contested for field position with the tough conditions making it hard for both sides to get a grip on the game. The torrid wind at the RAG made it hard for the exiles to clear their lines and easy for Jersey to apply pressure.

The following phases consisted mostly of  pressure from the Reds in the Scottish 22 but the Scottish lineout defence and goal line defence stood very strong. Countless times Jersey came knocking but found no way to the try line.

After a sustained period in the Scots 22, the ball was finally cleared to halfway and after some great play from Grayson Hart Scottish moved down into Jersey’s 22 and earned themselves a penalty. Rory Jennings duly slotted the penalty and Scottish were up 6-0.

Right on the stroke of half time, however, Jersey came knocking once again with a driving maul from a lineout penalty and forced their way over through hooker Jack MacFarlane. Brett Herron added the extras and Jersey had snatched a lead at HT.

Straight after half time Scottish restored their lead as Rory Jennings struck another 3 points from 40 metres out. LS 9 – 7 Jersey

Although instantly, from a scrum on halfway Jersey scrum half Will Homer and replacement number eight Janco Venter worked well together down the blindside to unlock the Scottish defence. Homer gassed the covering Scotish defenders to score in the corner. Herron missed the extras. LS 9 – 15 Jersey.

There was not a lot of action after this as both teams traded possession and battled to get a grip on the game. The wet and very windy conditions made things hard for both teams. Jersey threatened once with a neat grubber through but Grayson Hart covered well.

Scottish’s defence was solid for the second half as it had been all game and forced the Reds into countless handling errors but the exiles could never capitalise on their sturdy defensive phases.

In the dying embers of the game Scottish turned over a Reds lineout 5 metres away from the line but this time it was the Reds who would stand strong and forced the turnover to win the game.

On a miserable day at the RAG it was the Reds who took the spoils.
