Miles Wakleing and eighteen year old Taino Goveia are both named amongst the replacements for tomorrow’s pre-season game versus Loughborough Students at the RAG.

Wakeling is part of a development programme this season and has been training with the 1st XV since they came together for pre-season in June. He has the opportunity to make his first start tomorrow off the bench.

A back rower, also capable of playing in the second row, Wakeling was the stand out performer in last year’s Highlanders side. So much so that he was awarded Highlanders Player of the Season. This fine form has been rewarded and he will now look to represent the 1st XV for the first time.

The Scottish qualified back rower was happy to be given his opportunity and stated how he had loved being involved in Scottish’s professional environment.

“It has been a big step up for me coming from the Highlanders into full time rugby this year, but I have really enjoyed pre-season and I am excited to get on the pitch tomorrow against Loughborough.”

Wakeling continued, “It has been great being part of the squad this year and I am very excited about what is to come over the course of the season and I am hoping to learn as much as I can.”

Joining Wakeling on the bench is Taino Goveia, a young outside back who has only just left school. Goveia was part of the Under 18 set up last season and impressed with his quick feet and turn of pace.

Upon leaving Whitgift School this past summer, Goveia has been training with the 1st XV during pre-season. He will also look to make his first appearance for the 1st XV tomorrow – a very impressive feat for someone who has only just left school.

“Since joining the Junior Academy at 16, I have come a long way and worked through the ranks at London Scottish. I played my first game at 16 against Ealing Trailfinders and have also played in the famous New Years Eve game against Richmond for the Under 21s” said Goveia.

“Last year I was honoured to captain the Under 18s in Herts & Middlesex Division 2 with the great coaching of Nick Whittear, Charles Conder, Jon Steafal and Neil McFarlane who I could not thank enough. Especially Neil who has been there since my first session as an Under 16.”

Goveia continued to speak of how excited he was ahead of tomorrow’s game. “It is a proud moment for me to represent the 1st XV team in a pre-season game and a great experience which I hope to repeat and build on in the future.”

Director of Rugby Dave Morris was very happy to have two lads in the squad tomorrow who have progressed through Scottish’s ranks.

“Taino was with our U18s last year and has been invited to training sessions with the 1st XV to aid his development alongside his involvement with the London Scottish Senior Amateurs. Miles has signed for our 1st XV on the Professional Entry Programme having impressed with our senior amateur section last year.”

Morris continued, “congratulations to both players on their selection ahead of tomorrow. We have put together some great coaching and S&C support for our U18 and Senior Amateurs programmes to enable players to be the best they can be. Taino and Miles’ selection demonstrates our talent identification and commitment to development. I’m sure both players are a great inspiration to current senior amateurs and U18s”.
