Last week six players from the 1stXV headed up to watch the training of Super League side Castleford Tigers.

Former Castleford Tiger, rugby league legend and now London Scottish Backs coach Graham Steadman organised the session with his former side.

Ball players Rory Jennings, Jacob Perry and outside backs Joe Luca Smith, Charlie Ingall, Craig Duncan and Matt Davison all headed north to The Jungle to sit in on Castleford’s meetings and watch them train in the afternoon.

The Scottish players watched intently as The Tigers broke down their opposition for the weekend, Widnes Vikings, in meetings with their coaches. Following that, the Scots watched The Tigers train, learning how the rugby league side run their deception plays and how they fix defenders – opening space for oncoming attackers.

It was an invaluable experience for the players as they saw first hand the deception of open play in rugby league and how players can create space. Whilst the Exiles watched on, they were joined by Luke Gale, England stand off in the process of recovering from a fractured patella in his knee. Gale was coaching and chatting to the Scottish players, helping them understand the intricacies of the plays.

Backs coach Graham Steadman spoke very highly of the learning experience with his old rugby league side.

“It was massive for the boys’ development. With the style that we want to play this season, it was vital the lads understood how and why we run these types of plays. I can’t thank Castleford Tigers and Luke Gale enough for their time.”

Steadman continued, “big thanks to Powelly (Castleford Head Coach Daryl Powell) and Danny Orr (Assistant Coach) for letting us in on their session.”

Castleford managed to romp to victory over Widnes 52-24 at the weekend and continued their push for the Super League title, looking to go one more than last year and win the Grand Final.
