In the opening 10 minutes of the match Scottish were completely dominating their opponents and play was contained wholly within the Titans half of the pitch. Any threat posed by home side was quickly snuffed out by good defence. Scottish opened the scoring on the 10th minute. Ryan Westren made an excellent break from midfield and cut through the Rotherham backline and as he closed in on the home sides try line he was tackled by the Titans full back Stephen Hamilton, but managed to off load superbly to Scottish full back Stuart Peel who was on his shoulder and touched down 15 metres in from the touch line. In very difficult kicking conditions fly half James Brown missed with his conversion attempt.
From the restart the Rotherham kicker failed to gain the required 10 metres and Scottish again took play into the Titans half. On the 13th minute the Rotherham side were penalised for not rolling away at a ruck as the home side tried to slow play down. Brown again missed his conversion attempt as he pulled his kick to the right of the posts in the wind. It took the Titans until the 27th minute of the game until they managed to gain any sort of terrority in the Scottish half which was due to the pressure being put on the home side and resolute defence when the Rotherham side had any possession. Shortly after, the ball was moved out to the Scottish winger Agustin Gosio on the wing and as his opposite winger Peter Homan closed in on him, Gosio cleverly chipped over the head of Homan and in the race for the ball, although collecting his own kick he was bundled into touch 2 metres short of the try line.
The dominance being exerted by Scottish in this match can be highlighted by the fact that it took the Titans until the 33rd minute before they took play into the Scottish 22 metre, area after a kick through by their scrum half Dale Farnham. The Scottish defence held firm during this phase of the match and although they lost a number of line out throw ins during the whole match they were still able to turn over possession in lose play consistently and the Scottish back row were superb. Scottish conceded their first penalty in their 22 metre area on the 39th minute, immediately in front of their posts, however Rotherham opted to kick for a 5 metre line out. The home side were penalised at the line out for closing the gap and Scottish were able to clear their lines.
Scottish scored their second try close to the final whistle of the first half when the Scottish backs were very prominent in the build up to the try. Centre Charlie Hayter passed the ball to Westren who again made a very good break through the Rotherham back line and as Westren raced towards the try line he was tackled by the covering defence, but he managed to get the ball to the supporting player, number 8 Mark Bright. As Bright closed in towards the try line, he too was also tackled but off loaded superbly to Gosio for him to touch down. Brown missed the conversion attempt in the swirling wind, with the referee blowing for half time, with Scottish leading 0 - 10.
The home side replaced their outside centre Brian Godfrey at the half time break with former Glasgow Warriors centre Dave McCall. He made his presence felt immediately at the start of the second period, when he made a superb break making 50 metres and was only prevented from scoring by good Scottish covering defence, being bundled into touch as he was about to score in the corner. From the line out Scottish retained possession and at a subsequent scrum Rotherham were penalised allowing Scottish to take play up to the half way line.
Scottish stepped up their play in the opening 20 minutes of the second half and as they drove forward close to the Rotherham 22 metre, Brown attempted a drop goal on the 63rd minute, however the ball drifted wide of the left post as the wind pushed the ball away. Shortly after, Scottish scored their third try. Scottish replacement scrum half and Scottish U20 player Jamie Stevenson made a break down the blind side and took play deep into the Titans 22 metre area. In the tackle Stevenson off loaded to Bright who then passed to Westren, who then burst through to score out wide. Brown missed the conversion attempt. For the remainder of the half Scottish completely dominated their opponents as they went in search of their bonus point try, however the Rotherham side ,through good defence, held firm leaving a final score of 0 - 15.
A truly tremendous performance by Scottish in their final regular league match and this result completes the double over the Yorkshire outfit this season. With both Moseley and Plymouth Albion losing their final match, Scottish moved up two places in the league table to finish in 9th position in the final league standings for the regular season. The attitude shown by the match squad was superb throughout and they did not allow their opponents a sniff of their try line, other than the very good attempt by McCall. It was good to see the backs scoring all three tries, however the forwards also contributed heavily in setting up the platform for this win, by dominating the home side in the set piece and lose play.
The side now takes a well earned break next weekend ahead of the start of the play off fixtures, which are scheduled to commence on the weekend of the 9th/10th of March. Look out for confirmation of the fixture schedule for the play offs, which will appear on the website later in the week.
