A completely changed Scottish side featuring raft of 1st XV debuts were in touch until the hour mark thanks to two penalties from Craig Ratford and one from Oli Grove. However, the Welsh side's savvy rugby, and a lack of killer instinct from Scottish meant that it always looked to be a futile battle.
Welsh kicked off the game as the stronger of the two sides, and immediately exerted pressure on the London Scottish try line. Eventually this told, as a penalty was concede to the left of the posts, Alex Davies slotting the ball over to make it 0-3.
Scottish could quite easily have folded, even at this early stage, but instead the team began to exert some pressure of their own. Craig Ratford, making his first start at fly-half since the momentous Barking match last season tried to wrest some control, and a drop-goal attempt from the 22 sailed wide of the left-hand post. However. shortly afterwards, Welsh were caught offside at a ruck, and Ratford took advantage to send the ball over for three points.
The game began to find a rhythm at this point: both sides were furiously scrapping for the ball at the breakdown, which was leading to a number of errors and subseuent penalties. Davies was again the beneficiary of Scottish infringement, and picked up another three points to regain the lead for Welsh.
Midway through the first half, the Welsh side showed the first glimpse of class that would prove the difference between the two sides. Seb Jewell, making his first start for Welsh following his move from Wasps over the summer, broke through the static Scottish line and offloaded to Ben Russell who ran between the posts for the first try of the night. Davies again knocking the ball between the posts for a simple conversion to make it 3-13. Jewell epitomised the difference between the two sides during the evening: the ability of Welsh to call on players of his calibre in what was essentially a 2nd XV underlines their squad's strength in depth.
Grove and Ratford reduced the deficit before the half-time break with a penalties, and Beach was shown a yellow card, and with the scoreline 9-13 Scottish had every reason to be pleased with a hard-fought first half performance and a man advantage at the start of the second period.
However, the second half was all about Welsh: Scottish began to make handling errors, both during open play and at set pieces, and Davies took the opportunity to add another three points from the kicking tee.
Then, Ben Russell took advantage of referee Michael Tutty penalising the Scottish pack at a scrum and dived over, before a converted penalty try in Welsh's favour took the scoreline to 9-30.
Two more Welsh tries were scored as their backs took advantage of some tired Scottish defence, and at the end of the match the scoreline had a unfair look about it.
The FirstCape Man of the Match as chosen by Club President Rod Lynch was Tom Yellowlees.
