Pirates Defence Holds Out in Penzance

Pirates Defence Holds Out in Penzance

London Scottish travelled West to Penzance to take on the Cornish Pirates in the Championship, after the recent break for the cup, in the final game for both sides of 2018.

Scottish came out of the blocks quickly, and dominated the first half. First starts in the Championship were handed to Obatoyinbo & Bird-Tulloch, who caused the Pirates all manner of problems down each wing.

Scottish prodded and probed the Pirates defence, putting together a huge number of phases but they were unable to find their way through. Bright, Tyas, Vukasinovic, Uanivi, Harding, all finding their way beyond the 5m line blocked.

It took until the 24th minute for the Pirates to get into the Scottish 22, and they were clinical with their chances. Huge tackles flew in from Tyas and Vukasinovic, but Day called on every one of his 100 caps of experience for the Pirates to keep recycling the ball quickly after each phase. The powerful Matavesi eventually broke through a tackle down the wing and offloaded to Moyle who showed a clean pair of heels to make it to the line. Cargill converted to give the Pirates the lead against the run of play, LSFC 0-7 Pirates.

Scottish went on the attack from the re-start, sending Pirates reeling back into their own half. Big carries from Harding and Stevenson pulled Scottish deep into the Pirates 22, but the defence continued to hold out. The second visit to the 22, and second try for Pirates, came on the 33rd minute. Pirates muscled their way to the Scots 5m line, they drew defenders into the ruck until an overlap appeared, Day sent the ball wide to O’Meara who dived in the corner to score. No conversion meant the score stayed LSFC 0-12 Pirates at half time. Scottish spent around 34 out of 40 minutes camped in the Pirates half, but had nothing to show for it.

In the second half was the same story; Scottish were still struggling to turn their possession and territory into points. Uanivi was winning just about every Scottish and Pirates line out to keep the pressure on, but the Pirates defence was proving utterly stubborn. Pirates were struggling to break down Scottish too though, and when an a kickable penalty presented itself, they were quick to take the easy three points, LSFC 0-15 Pirates with about 15 mins left to play.

Pirates put together some nice phases, Matavesi was a constant threat, but Scottish maintained their possession dominance. Stevenson, Bird-Tulloch and Harding were all making in-roads into the Pirates defence. With about 7 minutes to go, Pirates got their third try of the afternoon; from a 5m scrum, the Pirates rumbled to the line and as it began to slow, captain Duncan peeled off the back to score. Cargill converted, LSFC 0-22 Pirates.

Matt Marley came on with 5 minutes to go, and got Scottish up to the try line, but Scottish could not come away with any points. Some wayward passing saw the ball get dropped, Pirates kicked it off the ground and chased the ball all the way back to the Scots 22. From there they went through a number of phases which eventually forced Scottish to concede a penalty to keep them out.

From the resulting 5m scrum, Pirates got their fourth try of the afternoon. Ashby missed the conversion to bring the game to a close, LSFC 0-27 Pirates.

Huge credit to the Pirates defence, they were solid along their own 5m line. Scottish will feel that if they had taken even half of their chances in the first 40 they would have been out of sight within 20 minutes. Stand out performances from Harding, Uanivi and Bird-Tulloch.
