I think it's fair to say it's been a mixed couple of weeks for us a squad. Having put so much into the Esher fixture it was devastating to lose in the manner we did. We didn't help ourselves, we were too slow out the blocks and gifting Esher a 17-0 lead after 15 minutes was rugby suicide. It was an even tougher pill to swallow given some of the rugby we played. We challenged them upfront and our backline tore them apart for the majority of the game. Alas, credit where it's due, they were a physical team who were dominated the breakdown and gave us a wall to look at for much of the afternoon.
Thankfully, we put that game behind us last Saturday and Nuneaton bore the brunt of our anger! It was certainly a stiff test of character for the boys. After playing in front of a bumper 2,500 (massive thank to all who came by the way, your support didn't go unnoticed) at the athletic ground, we were then faced with a late pitch change at Nuneaton and a heavy pitch. Other teams may have imploded but we have become a mentally tough outfit over the past 6 months and failed to let these changes faze us. Despite not really getting out of 3rd gear we put them away with a bonus point win to get back on the title trail!
Today sees us welcome Blaydon to London Scottish soil and I hope all their players and supporters had a safe trip down. We are fully aware they will be seeking revenge after beating them on their home turf and I know from experience that losing on a big away trip makes the coach trip that much longer. But after losing our first game at home for the best part of 2 years we will be doing our upmost to ensure that the athletic ground becomes a fortress again.
