London Scottish Picts

Who are the Picts?

The Picts were formed in the early 70s by Malcolm Gillespie from one of the A sides at a time when London Scottish ran 5 A sides and 3 B sides below the 1st and 2nd XVs.

The Picts side became largely a base for players who at one time had played at the top of the club and who wished to continue playing rugby, albeit socially, in a competitive environment.

Our traditional rivals the Richmond Heavies were also formed around this time and in due course so were similar sides at London Irish, Harlequins, Wasps and Saracens.

These games in particular were taken very seriously and formed the crux of what was to become a very good standard of veterans' rugby.  Ex-International and England Captains appeared regularly for the opposition yet over the years the Picts lost very few games.

In 1985 the Athletic Ground was one of the host venues for the Golden Oldies' World Tournament and the Picts played sides from Australia and the USA.  The tournament was preceded by a grand parade at Twickenham.

The introduction of league rugby and then professionalism has cut off the natural supply of players from the top of the club at the moment - time should correct this and allow players to end their careers in a most enjoyable and social form of competitive rugby.

The Picts enjoy a challenging standard of rugby, Society referees and a first rate fixture list with games against all the major London clubs.

2006-2007 plans:

The new 6th XV will fulfil the regular Merit Table fixtures; the Picts will play a series of occasional games on an invitation basis. If you are a London Scottish player of a certain age, your club needs you!
