The Academy

After four years planning ... in 2006-2007 season we have now established an Academy with the financial support of the Scottish Rugby Union and the Friends of Scottish Rugby, as well as vital support from some very generous donors.

The aim is to help develop those Scottish-qualified players in the south east who have the potential to play professional and international rugby; they will be invited to join the academy and given one-to-one training and development programmes.

However players do not have to be Scottish-qualified to join and play for the club and benefit from our coaching excellence.

The Academy also has a brief to identify and develop young players of all nationalities who will graduate to play first team rugby at the club - hopefully high up in the national leagues!

News: January 21, 2008

December and January saw the Academy players head North for Performance Development Group camps (PDG’s) and trials matches with a view to making the National Age Group Teams. Unfortunately whilst performing well and receiving some excellent feedback the guys did not quite make the final step up.

The fact that all our players were invited to attend the PDG’s shows that we’re going in the right direction and competing as they were, against many players who have professional academy backgrounds bodes well for the future.

Back at the club our Junior Academy (U13’s-U16’s) assessment days have been held and those players who have been selected begin their programmes at the end of January. Well done to all of them.

The club continue to support the Scottish Exiles programme by hosting the Regional Development Group skills evenings and January’s saw 25 players put through their paces. Exiles Player Development Manager, Rob Brierley feels the continued support from the club is vital to the growth of Exiles rugby in London and as it grows hopefully more players will progress to the club and country ranks.

Academy Summer Camp 29-31 August

unfortunately this has been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances

NEWS: July 18:

Ross Grimstone, Robert Macpherson-Smith and Andrew Pedder are moving up to the next level of development by being selected for the SRU's Player Development Group later this year.

Also...There will be also be two matches on the 30th of September, (U18's) and the 14th of October ( Colts), where the Scottish Exiles (South) will play Irish Exiles.

The first match is at St Mary's, Teddington the latter here at the club. Subject to Exiles selection the club academy players will feature.

Development Day

5 March 2007 - The Academy recently hosted a development day for the Scottish Exiles where 32 players in the 17/18 age group section were invited.

In addition to those earlier identified by the Exiles a further number were invited by the academy, both internal and external players, to establish their rugby skills level under close scrutiny.

Strength & conditioning coach Dean Sutton gave a presentation on appropriate training needs for young players and the academy staff and guest coaches put the players through a series of match related practises and drills to develop and highlight the skills needed to play the game at the highest level.

Former Scotland U21 and current Wasps Premiership player, Mark McMillan, gave a scrum half master class, with Harlequins RLFC player Ben Pegner working with Club Captain Alex Alesbrook and 1st XV player David Box to look at the tackle area. New community coach and 1st XV centre Bryan Milne, coached the role of the 1st and 2nd receivers and how important their role is in creating space.

Academy Director Rowly Williams used the afternoon to show a series of Premiership highlights on the big screen to the group, pausing at appropriate moments to ask “ What would you do here” ??. The exercise, designed to improve decision making skills ‘on the hoof’, proved invaluable to the young players seeking to gain an insight into rugby at the top end and thus improve their own all round game.

There will be a further development day over the Easter holidays. Date to be Confirmed.

The Academy will be aligned to the Exiles and SRU site at the Rosslyn Park Schools 7’s on the 19th-22nd of March.

Congratulations to Young London Scots ...

25 Jan 2007 - Matt Heeks has been selected for Scotland's Under 19 World Cup Training Squad just a few days after joining Charles Broughton as the first two players awarded Tier 1 status (Elite Player Programme) at the new club academy; both are now receiving regular individual skills and technique work as well as fitness programmes and diet/lifestyle guidance under the auspices of Academy Director Rowly Williams.

Charles (20) is of course no stranger to the club having joined as a 14-year old and played for one of the club's most successful age group sides for five seasons before graduating to 1st XV this season - he is London One's leading try scorer. Matt joined this season when he moved down from Windsor to study at St Mary's College, Twickenham.

Congratulations also to three players picked to start for Middlesex Under 17s this Sunday v Sussex in Chichester: Chuku Modu (Lock), Chris Brown (Fly-Half) and Daniel Heath (Right Wing)

In 2007 the Academy will select a small cadre of players aged 16-21, who in the opinion of the Academy director and the national age group coaches in Scotland  have  the potential to play professional and international rugby.

These players will join the Elite Player programme at the Academy, which will provide significant personal training, mentoring, development and support.

All Academy players who attend masterclasses and/or play in Development Squad fixtures will be kept under continual review; those who do not achieve Elite Player status will be advised what development needs should be addressed, and each season there will be opportunities for additional players to join the Elite programme.

Academy aims presented

28 November 2006 - At the recent academy open evening held at London Scottish, academy director, Rowly Williams outlined the aims and objectives of the academy and it’s structure.

The presentation showed the 3 tiers system that will be in place identifying young players for the academy - Academy Elite player. Academy player. and the Player Development Programme.

Tier 1 a player developed through the academy structure and linked to Scottish Rugby’s (SRU’s) pathway programme, with possible placements/attachments at a professional team’s rugby academy and monitored by the National Academy coaches..

Tier 2 a player developed through the academy structure to attain the highest level that player is able with a goal to strive for Tier 1.

Tier 3 sees those players who have the potential to become an academy player and placed on a development programme to allow them to reach that goal.

The recruitment of players will be based on players being seen through the trial matches at county/divisional level. Coach recommendation and academy staff assessment. Only those players who are to be placed on the SRU’s pathway programme need concern themselves about being Scottish qualified. These young players must be  qualified to play for country.

The London Scottish club however can and will draw on the best young players available.

The club academy will provide opportunities through being seen at the Scottish Exiles development days and trials matches. The club academy works in tandem with Scottish Rugby’s Player Development Manager for England, Rob Brierly.

As soon as possible the web site will carry the presentation in full.

National Colts Cup

In 2003-2004 The U19s entered the National Colts Cup and lost in round 3 by a point to Old Cooperians (Essex); they were placed in the Plate and progressed to the final, beating Tring (Herts), Wymondham (Norfolk), Havant (Hants), Ipswich (Suffolk) Otley (Yorks) and Middlesbrough before losing in the final at Franklin's Gardens Northampton. Of these all bar Ipswich was played away - over 1,500 miles travelled!

A year later we beat South Woodham Ferrers, Saracens and Weston-super-Mare before losing narrowly to eventual finalists London Welsh in the last 8. We beat London Irish (National semi finalists) in the County Cup final

In the late 1990s the "old" amateur and the short-lived professional clubs at London Scottish had a highly successful development academy, winning the national Development League and producing many players who have since played professional rugby.

More recently we have successfully developed younger players through our minis and youth sides, and have consistently won county age group titles.

Five of our recent Colts have gone on to play 1st XV rugby, which is about the same number as achieved this between 1975 and 2000

To bring players on, we have committed considerable resources to our Academy coaching and management structure.
