Teddington U13 45 v London Scottish U13 0
A tough day for the London Scottish under 13s team with Teddington coming to call for the second time this season.  Scottish were down to a bare-bones starting fifteen, and the contrast with the closely-run first encounter back in October was startling – unfortunately we are now playing at a level where an unsettled back-line with players filling unfamiliar positions creates a huge disadvantage... there is simply no time in a match situation for new combinations to settle in.  Teddington are a strong side – sitting top of the league with bonus-point wins from every game – and have a combination of talented half-backs, over-sized centres and swift wingers that have troubled all of their opponents this season.  The difference in the confidence of the sides mounted up over the initial 25 minute period, with Teddington running away to score over 45 points and draw the league fixture to a close by half-time.

London Scottish Link up with Hertstoppers Cheerleaders!
Hello, my name is Michelle Antoniades. I am excited to introduce the Cheerleading for Schools programme in conjunction with London Scottish Rugby for schools and community. I am a qualified Cheerleading coach and have been coaching for the successful HERSTOPPERS Cheerleading club for almost 2 years. The club has gone from strength to strength taking first place in their last 3 regional competitions and winning the Grand Champions trophy twice in a row! HERTSTOPPERS has since branched out to coach cheerleading as part of sports and exercise, coaching in both primary and secondary schools around Hertfordshire, North London and South West London and we are now teaming up with London Scottish to continue to promote this new and exciting sport. In addition, we will be running Cheerleading fundays over the Easter holidays for children of all ages and abilities.  I am also very excited to introduce the London Scottish Cheerleading squad which will perform on match days. Trials for the squad are open to girls aged 12 and over who have experience in dance, gymnastics, sports acrobatics or an interest in sports and fitness. Trials will take place on 9th and 16th March! (Call for more details!)

Academy News - February 21st 2009
Welcome all to today’s match, one which, with all due respect to what’s going on in the rest of the league, will pretty much determine the outcome of the top spots in the league this season. That it falls on a non International weekend is excellent news for both teams, as a bumper crowd should be here to witness the top two slug it out... Metaphorically one trusts, not literally.

The Academy rugby sessions have suffered, (if that’s the right phrase), along with the rest of the sporting world in recent weeks in the South East.  Inches and inches, or about 20 centimetres if you’re so inclined, of snow was the first to fall, followed by the big freeze and just when you thought it was safe to tread the turf again, buckets of rain. All three types of weather conspired to prevent the pitches being used and so indoors we went, or relied on the guys to do their own thing away from the club. That they have returned in as good a shape as we could have expected,  without the weekly practical sessions says much about their discipline and commitment, so well done guys.

NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER JOINS LONDON SCOTTTISH

LEE RUST – NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

“Hello one and all! I just thought I’d take a quick minute to introduce myself to the mini and junior sections of club. My name is Lee Rust. As some of you might know last week I started employment with LSFC as a Club and Community Development Officer. In an external sense the role is all about developing the LSFC community schemes and our links. Internally it will be about helping integrate the mini, junior and eventually the Academy into the community programmes and the club as a whole.

I played my rugby with Leicester Tigers (4seasons) and Coventry (1season). I was then forced to take a break from the playing career at which point I moved into coaching and development work, initially for the RFU, then as a Club and Coach Development Officer and most recently as an academy coach with Newcastle Falcons. Coaching commitments, aside from LSFC, now lie part-time with Scottish Exiles and the Hong Kong national team. I’m due to start my level 4 coaching qualification this year and have a level 2 strength and conditioning qualification.

I’ll be down at the club for a few of the coming Sunday so I'll hopefully catch up with some of you then.”

ACADEMY NEWS - OCTOBER 25TH 2008

Welcome to today’s latest foray into the National league programme with Dings Crusaders the latest to visit the Athletic Ground. The most recent news from the Academy is that two of our number attended the Scottish pathway Performance Development Group camp for potential Scotland U20 selection.

Prop Paul Webster, (fresh back from several weeks playing in South Africa), and scrum half Callum Grant recently played in a winning Exiles team against a Glasgow select XV. We await the feedback and hopefully good news as regards the next stage for them.

Callum, along with wing Rory Brabant also stepped up to the mark last week when making their 1st XV debuts against St Mary’s in the national cup match. Not only debuts, but try scoring and winning debuts to boot. The system of incorporating the senior academy guys into the 1st XV squad is clearly going to pay dividends as the season wears on and strength in depth becomes a key factor.

With Paul Webster, wing Calum Williams, full back Alex Sutherland and centre/10, Rob McPherson-Smith also waiting in the wings, it provides a welcome boost to the senior coaches to know that the guys can deliver when called upon and that their past 18 months or so of hard work has been well worth it.

More importantly it shows clearly that the pathway to the top is more than just words and diagrams on paper. The age group players and those offered academy spots can see that with the necessary hard work and commitment, running out in a coveted 1st XV shirt is very achievable.

Brett Taylor now in place and gradually reviewing the systems and structures in place throughout the club, shares the view that the senior academy players coming through should be encouraged and actively tested as regularly as possible within the ‘gold’ training group.

I’ve been in this game long enough to know that if one of the senior squad feels his place is under threat from one of the ‘young bucks’, or should that be ‘lion cub’ coming through the ranks, the bar will very definitely be raised. From an Academy perspective that’s exactly what we’d want.

Ultimately there’ll be battles to see if the old adage of  ‘age and experience’ will overcome ‘youth and enthusiasm’ rings true . Eventually the team benefits because during these metaphoric battles the perfect blend of all those qualities emerge and when that blend gets it right on the field...  Well anything’s possible.

Enjoy the match.
