Development Side Triumph in Swedish Tour
In another successful win, the Development XV won the Pingvin tournament in Sweden last weekend.

Maintaining the proud touring tradition of London Scottish, the Development Squad won the Pingvin Easter Games at Trelleborg in an 8 team tournament involving Swedish, Danish, Dutch and Irish sides.  Scottish scored 177 and conceded 14 points in winning all five 40-minute 15-a-side games. Playing an expansive style of rugby the team, which was a combination of old heads and young academy and development players won all three of their group games on the Friday with relative ease.  The only points conceded in the group stage via a penalty try given for hands in the ruck.  This first game in the tournament also saw Scottish on the receiving end of a ‘local tournament’ ruling which saw young winger Rory Brabant having to do a lap of the pitch before being allowed back onto the field for excessive ‘chat’.

London Cornish 2nds  8 – 18  London Scottish Development
On a windy day Scottish made heavy weather of winning this match to avenge the one-point home defeat against Cornish in November and keep Scottish vying for the league title.  Scottish dominated the first half playing with the wind, but only managed to score ten points.  Cornish had more of the game in the second half and had the upper hand for a ten minute spell before Scottish sealed their win with a late try.

Tring II  27 - 18  London Scottish Development
Scottish Development’s chances of winning their league division effectively ended with this defeat, Tring IIs having lost only once this season - to Scottish in November.  With their first team not playing and substantial vociferous support well into three-figures, Tring were always going to be difficult to beat on their sloping patch. They were well up for this match, whereas despite the best efforts of coach Robinson and captain Millar, the ever-changing Development side with four men playing out of position never quite matched Tring’s intensity. Although the result was disappointing, Scottish can take great encouragement from fine performances from their developing youngsters, particularly Sutherland, Heeks, Thompson, Grimstone, Johnson and Caraffi.

London Scottish Development 29-7 Old Colfeians II - Feb 21st 2009
In glorious spring sunshine, this was an open game with lots of running rugby, but rather lacked cohesion and was littered with frustrating mistakes – perhaps not surprising with only six of week’s side playing in a much-changed Scottish squad, which included four club debutants.  The game was fairly even in terms of possession and territory, but Scottish always looked to carry the greater scoring threat.

Ruislip II 3 - 32 London Scottish Development
Scottish won this game comfortably, but, as with the reverse fixture in October, took their time to translate stylish play into points.  Several clear scoring opportunities were missed with the final pass wayward or dropped to the jeers of the local support.

LSFC Development 37 – 0 Ruislip 2nds
Scottish always had the edge over a fiercely committed Ruislip side, but it was around the hour before the result was put beyond reasonable doubt. Three tries in the last eleven minutes produced a convincing victory in the end.

Rosslyn Park Hatters 7 – 31 LSFC Dev XV
Scottish comfortably won this rather scrappy game against a stuffy Park side, but never settled sufficiently to make their potential superiority really count.  Aylward and Rice consistently broke or half-broke the line and Scottish had the clear edge on pace out wide.
