After a great season, winning 16 out of 18 matches, London Scottish 2nd XV has this week been confirmed as Champions of the Canterbury Shield Division 1.
In winning the league London Scottish defeated Esher, Blackheath, London Welsh and Glamorgan Wanderers as well as local rivals Richmond (twice), Rosslyn Park (twice) and Ealing. |

Despite crowd rumblings about the advantage Esher seemed to have in terms of forwards' size and history in this fixture, it took Scottish all of 2 minutes to set out their stall, taking the attack immediately into their visitors' 22, moving the ball through hands to both sides of the pitch before Dan Grinter delivered the coup de grace to open the home team's account at 5-0. Scottish maintained their dominance for the whole of the first quarter and were rewarded with a second score, again through the forwards and a justified reward for all the powerful carrying by Ledua Jope, extending the lead to 10-0. Despite continuing to press the Esher line for the rest of the half, there were no more scores. |

A rather downbeat end of season game of uncontested scrums in wintry conditions saw Scottish fail to win despite completely dominating the first half and having the better of the second half chances. The result was tribute to the young Plymouth side’s feistiness in defence, which Scottish, even with impressive ball retention, found difficult to overcome. |

The Scottish players savoured a satisfying victory in this local derby after a frustrating couple of months of cancelled fixtures, easy wins in mismatched games and disappointing performances in the only two league matches played. Scottish perhaps made rather heavy weather of securing the win after dominating the first quarter, but the game against traditional local rivals was always going to be close and hard fought. Two debutants were welcomed into the backs – colt MacPherson-Smith, who excelled in defence but saw little of the ball in attack, and Steele from Bath University who came on for a very solid last 15 minutes. |

Scottish redeemed themselves to some extent with a determined second-half performance, but missed too many tackles and coughed up the ball too often, especially in the first half, to overcome a good Esher side who were generally sharper in execution. |
