The match was won with just 14 players on the Scottish team in the second half, as a red card decision was made by the referee against the visitors close to the end of the first half of the game.
The win was secured through two late tries during the closing 10 minutes of the entire match from left wing David Howells, following some sterling work from the pack that gave the hosts few opportunities to press home their established advantage at that point.
London Scottish took an early lead in the form of a fifth-minute penalty from full back Frankie Neale, but it was the home side that claimed the game’s opening try on the 14 minute mark after their centre crossed the line to make the score 5 – 3.
Scottish full-back Frankie Neale responded with a second penalty to restore his side’s lead to 6 – 6. After 26 minutes the Wharfedale skipper was sin-binned, but the visitors were unable to capitalise on their temporary numerical advantage. The home side then added a second try, scored by their prop shortly after the half-hour mark in which their fly half failed to find the target with his kick once again, leaving the score 10 – 6 at halftime.
Solid work from the forwards and strong last-ditch tackling by the Scottish backs, as well as a series of handling errors from Wharfedale meant that the home team were unable to translate their superiority in numbers into points. In the last 20 minutes of the game a seven-man visiting pack stepped up a gear, with second row Iain Fullarton gaining the travelling supporters’ man of the match award for his tireless work.
With the game entering its last ten minutes, the parity in numbers was restored when Wharfedale flanker Latu Maka’afi was yellow-carded. This time, Scottish eagerly seized their chance.
On the 72 minute mark, a trademark kick from fly half James Brown over the Wharfedale defence was claimed by David Howells who touched the ball down in the left-hand corner putting his side into the lead.
Five minutes later the left wing struck again, with his second try coming after a flowing move across the Scottish back line. This time around James Brown, took over kicking duties from Frankie Neale, sending the ball between the uprights to make the final score 18 –10.
The victory leaves Scottish second in the table, six points behind Esher who have played one less game and yesterday beat Tynedale 34 – 24.
Next week, Scottish host the league’s bottom club, Manchester with the match kicking off at 3pm at the Athletic Ground. Scottish ran out 93 – 0 winners when the two sides met last October.
