Academy applications

Applications will be gathered through the online academy application form for the following season's intake.

Recruitment is done through appropriate media and will target clubs and schools in the London area but welcome applications outside of the area. Scottish eligible players are a main target group but the invitation is to all talented players that want to reach the professional game.

The deadline for applications is the first week in June every year.

The start of pre-season is in July followed by trials at the end of July and the start of August.

Invitation to pre-season & trials

WHO WILL BE INVITED?

LSFC will invite selected players, sifted from the applications received, to join the academy pre-season and trial games.

Pre Season

WHEN WILL IT START?

Pre-season will start in July and will include full squad sessions with delivery on skills, technique, game sense & conditioning.

Training

WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY OF ACADEMY SESSIONS?

Training will be twice a week on Monday and Wednesday nights.

HOW WILL PLAYERS BE GRADED?

Through the pre season players will be assessed according to potential, ability, progression and character and will be placed in teams for pre-season trial games and after the trials and trial period we'll select the junior and senior academy squads.

Final Squads

WHY FINAL SQUADS?

The junior and senior academy squads will be selected from the trial games as well as a development group below the main squads.

The Development Squad

This will consist of players that still need more development (skill, game sense, physiologically and physically) to reach the Performance Squad (main academy squads).

By increasing participation opportunities at all levels (club/school/constituent body/region), while providing further training opportunities with the academy squads, we hope to give players a chance to move into the main Academy Squads. This way we can monitor and assist with developing the players in this category for their registered clubs but also keep the pathway open for players that needs to move to a higher level. Players are welcome to join our relevant junior age group teams and senior teams at London Scottish which help us to monitor and help develop them more closely.

The Academy Squads

This will consist of players we rate as players that can potentially make the step up to the next levels of rugby, to either playing professional rugby as a minimum but ultimately move on to higher accolades.

The Scottish eligible players will still be part of the Scottish Exiles Programme. The academy consists of two squads: the Junior Academy and the Senior Academy.

The Pro Lions Select

The best players from this group who can progress to the higher levels of Championship/Premiership, will get invited to train with the London Scottish Championship Pro Squad more regularly and if the management feels a player can make the step up to the next level, they will consider working with those in helping them towards becoming professional players. Such players might be signed on a rookie contract or full contract at the end of the academy season. Those selected players are called the PRO LIONS SELECT to identify them. These contracts will only be given where the player is ready and where the club feels it can be offered.

WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY OF ACADEMY SESSIONS IN SEASON?

The Development Squad players will train once a month with the Academy Squad and will train weekly with their club or college or with junior and senior teams at London Scottish if preferred to stay within the club.

The Academy Squad will train twice a week as a squad and will also join training at junior and senior teams at the club.
